Pre-1948: The Roots of Aggression
Before the establishment of Israel, Zionist paramilitary groups such as Haganah and Irgun carried out operations in towns near Gaza like Isdud (Ashdod) and Majdal (Ashkelon), laying the groundwork for future conflict. Palestinian civilians were forcibly displaced, and many villages in Gaza’s vicinity were depopulated or destroyed.
2005: The "Disengagement"
In 2005, Israel withdrew its settlers and military presence from Gaza. However, this did not equate to liberation. It marked the start of a strict land, sea, and air blockade—effectively turning Gaza into what many international observers describe as an open-air prison.
Major Military Operations:
2006 - Operation Summer Rains & Autumn Clouds
Military action followed the capture of an Israeli soldier. Hundreds of Palestinians lost their lives, and critical infrastructure was severely damaged.
2008-2009 - Operation Cast Lead
22-day assault resulted in over 1,400 Palestinian casualties, many of them civilians. Schools, homes, and hospitals were targeted.
2012 - Operation Pillar of Cloud
An eight-day operation resulted in the deaths of over 160 Palestinians.
2014 - Operation Protective Edge
One of the most devastating escalations to date. Over 2,200 Palestinians were reported dead, including more than 500 children. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to rubble.
2018 - The Great March of Return
Thousands of unarmed demonstrators at the Gaza border faced live fire. Over 300 Palestinians were killed, and thousands more were injured.
2021 - Operation Guardian of the Walls
11 days of bombardment. 260+ Palestinians killed, including entire families.
2023 - October Escalation and Beyond
Following events in early October 2023, Israel began what has become an ongoing, large-scale military campaign. To date, over 30,000 Palestinians have been reported dead, with continued strikes impacting hospitals, refugee camps, and shelters.
The Human Toll and Global Responsibility
Beyond the statistics are real human stories: lives lost, families fractured, futures uncertain. Gaza remains a symbol not only of endurance but of an ongoing pursuit for dignity and justice. It is essential to raise awareness, support humanitarian relief, and call for accountability—always guided by a commitment to peace and human rights.
